PuCom : Communication system using pupil response

Problems & Solutions

The intended customer of our system is the people with locked-in syndrome, who cannot move their own limbs, body parts and even the eyes by their own intentions. Ordinary interface systems have some difficulties in communication with others for such people. Brain signal systems uses contact sensors, requires complex information processing to analyze signal. The accuracy is not high and the correspondence between the signal and the user’s intention is not explicit. Eye movements system requires calibration steps. It doesn’t work for the people with completely locked-in state.

Our interface system uses the correspondence between the characteristics of the visual target and the pupillary responses.

This system has several potential advantages over existing systems.

Our interface system uses the correspondence between the characteristics of the visual target and the pupillary responses.

System

Advantages of our system; No calibration required; The position of observer is flexible; The principle is valid; Eye movements is not necessary.

Team & Supports

Researchers at Tokyo Tech are collaborating with COMAS Co., Ltd and Japan Assistive Technology Committee to develop a communication system named PuCom for people with Locked-in Syndrome and other related disabili- ties. This project is supported by AI for Accessibility projects of Microsoft.
